What to do before and during tunnel transit

Before reaching the tunnel

  • Check that you have enough fuel
  • Pay attention to the road signs on the approach to the tunnel

When entering the tunnel

  • Switch on your dipped headlights
  • Take off sunglasses
  • Keep your distance (cars and motorcycles  50 m, HGVs and buses 150 m)
  • Switch on your radio and listen to the stations available
  • Pay attention to traffic signals
  • Do not overtake under any circumstances
  • Do not try to turn or reverse anywhere in the tunnel 

If traffic comes to a standstill

  • Switch on your hazard warning lights
  • Pull up on the right hand side of the tunnel
  • Keep your distance from the vehicle in front even though stationary
  • Switch off the engine
  • Remain in your vehicle
  • Listen to the traffic reports on the radio
  • Never try to turn round or reverse.
  • Follow the instructions of the tunnel personnel or the traffic signals

If you have a breakdown

  • Switch on your hazard warning lights
  • If possible, pull into a lay-by or other stopping place
  • Otherwise, pull up on the right edge of the lane
  • Switch off the engine and leave your keys in the ignition
  • Get out of your vehicle.
  • Look for the next SOS station and notify the emergency centre
  • Wait for the breakdown truck to arrive

If there is an accident

  • Switch on your hazard warning lights
  • If possible, pull into a lay-by or other stopping place
  • Otherwise, pull up on the right edge of the lane
  • Switch off the engine and leave your keys in the ignition
  • Get out of your vehicle.
  • Give first aid if possible and necessary
  • Look for the next SOS station and notify the emergency centre

If there is a fire

  • If possible, drive your car out of the tunnel
  • Otherwise, pull up at a safe distance on the edge of the lane
  • Switch on your hazard warning lights
  • Get out of your car immediately, leaving the keys in the ignition and look for the next escape chamber
  • Notify the emergency centre and wait for further instructions in the escape chamber
  • Give first aid if possible and necessary
  • Follow the instructions given over the loudspeakers
